Apicoectomy Can Save an Infected Tooth

While root canal therapy is often highly effective, there are some cases when treatment can fail. Whether due to exceptionally small dental roots that are missed during the procedure or a new infection, it is essential to seek timely treatment to protect your smile. Dr. Aric Petersen specializes in endodontics, allowing him to apply his extensive knowledge of the inner tooth structure to provide precise apicoectomy. This procedure allows direct access and treatment of inflamed tissue near the root of the tooth. Dr. Petersen uses advanced tools and techniques to provide maximum relief with minimal discomfort at our Scottsdale, AZ, office.

Do You Need an Apicoectomy?

Endodontic surgery may be recommended if:

  • You are suffering from persistent symptoms but no problems are evident
  • A tooth becomes reinfected
  • The roots or bone have become damaged
  • Some root canals were not addressed during the first treatment

Dr. Petersen and his team can perform an apicoectomy to relieve discomfort and protect the health of your tooth, often saving it from extraction.

How It Works

illustration of infected tooth rootAn apicoectomy is an endodontic surgery that is designed to provide direct access to the tooth roots to alleviate infection. During the procedure, your doctor will create an incision in the gum tissue near the afflicted tooth. This allows him to access the underlying bone and provides better ability to evaluate the treatment area for any fractures or damage.

He will then remove any infected or inflamed tissue as well as the tip of the root, seal the root canal with a filling placed at the tip of the root, and suture the gums closed.

Is Apicoectomy Covered by Insurance?

Typically, apicoectomy is covered by insurance. However, if your insurance only covers a portion of your procedure or you do not have insurance, we also accept financing through CareCredit® to help you afford this critical treatment.

High-Quality Endodontic Care

At Petersen Endodontics, we are dedicated to providing patients with the best possible care. There are several aspects of our treatments that we believe help us accomplish this goal, such as:

Enhanced Patient Comfort

During each treatment, our staff makes every effort to help you feel welcome and at ease. In addition to a relaxing atmosphere, we also provide sedation to help patients who are nervous or suffer from dental phobia.

To accommodate your needs, we offer nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and intravenous (IV) sedation. You can discuss any concerns, including dental phobia, with Dr. Petersen during your consultation to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure.

State-of-the-Art Technology

When planning your treatment, we use the latest technology to take highly detailed images, allowing us to provide accurate diagnosis and identify where the infection lies. We also use surgical operating microscopes to perform procedures with greater accuracy. Some issues, such as small fractures, may not be clearly visible even with these advanced devices.

However, together, these tools can help us:

  • Alleviate some discomfort
  • Reduce recovery time by causing less trauma to the surrounding tissues
  • Remove the infection and treat the tooth to minimize the risk of future extraction

We use our skills and resources to your advantage for long-lasting results.
