Our team utilizes the latest technology to evaluate your condition and provide an accurate diagnosis. This information has a direct impact on the success of the procedure.

Once we have confirmed you are suffering from a root canal infection, your doctor will provide you with instructions to follow before your visit. It is especially important that patients:
- Do not drink alcohol or smoke the night before
- Follow antibiotics instructions, if required
- Eat a regular meal, unless receiving intravenous (IV) sedation
You can address any questions or concerns you may have during your consultation. You will also have the opportunity to discuss sedation dentistry if you are especially anxious.

Root canal therapy consists of several steps designed to restore health to a damaged tooth.
A Breakdown of the Procedure
Before beginning, we will administer sedation and apply a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Dr. Petersen and our team make every effort during your procedure to be as gentle as possible.
Removing Damaged Tissue
The first portion of the root canal procedure will focus on removing the infection. Using a surgical operating microscope, Dr. Petersen will create a very small opening in the tooth. This advanced tool allows us to preserve more of the tooth's natural structure and more accurately remove damaged soft tissue inside the root canals. Finally, he will thoroughly disinfect the inside of the tooth using the minimally invasive GentleWave® System.
GentleWave technology significantly improves on traditional root canal treatment, reducing discomfort and providing longer-lasting results.
Filling the Tooth
Once the cleaning process is complete, your doctor will slightly reshape the inside of the tooth. The root canals will then be filled with gutta percha (a rubber-like material) and composite buildup, and a temporary dental filling may also be placed. We will schedule you for a follow-up so Dr. Petersen can check on your progress before you proceed with treatment.
Dental Crown Placement
About a week after your checkup at our office, you will return to your dentist's office to finalize the procedure. An impression of your bite will be taken and used to create a permanent, custom restoration. A dental crown can mimic the appearance of your natural tooth and provide long-term protection and strength.
