Your Recovery Following Root Canal Therapy
Many people are hesitant to undergo endodontic treatment because they are not sure exactly what it entails. At Petersen Endodontics in Scottsdale, AZ, our compassionate team begins by helping patients develop realistic expectations about the procedure and their root canal recovery. Typically, patients can expect minimal pain following a root canal and return to normal activities the following day. Certified endodontist Dr. Aric Petersen uses advanced, conservative techniques and the latest technology, including the advanced GentleWave® System, to further minimize recovery time and risk of complications.
Immediately after Your Procedure
After your procedure, you may experience numb lips and have trouble speaking clearly for several hours. Additionally, if you have undergone oral conscious or IV (intravenous) sedation, you may feel groggy and sleepy. It is important that you have a friend or family member drive you home and rest for the remainder of the day. Typically, patients can return to regular activities the next morning.
As the effects of the anesthesia and sedation wear off, you may begin to feel slight throbbing in your tooth and surrounding tissues. You may also experience some soreness in the jaw. For most patients, an over-the-counter pain reliever should be effective in minimizing any discomfort.
It is essential that you maintain proper oral hygiene during and after your recovery to prevent contamination of the treatment site. Regular flossing and gentle brushing, especially around the treatment area, should be sufficient during your recovery.
We strive to ensure patients experience a successful recovery, both immediate and long-term, by providing complimentary annual checkups.
For the first few days after your procedure, you should consume soft foods including:
- Mashed vegetables
During this time, your temporary filling is susceptible to fracture so it is especially important to avoid very sticky or hard foods. You can return to a normal diet once your tooth has been restored with a dental crown.
Ensuring the Best Outcome
We have implemented several measures to provide patients with the best possible outcome:
We take a conservative approach to root canal therapy to minimize the risk of structural damage. Traditionally, a fairly large hole is made to access the inner chamber of the tooth. Using a 3-D cone beam scanner and surgical operating microscope, we can create a significantly smaller opening while still performing comparable, if not more precise, treatment. Dr. Petersen also uses the minimally invasive GentleWave System, which allows us to preserve even more of the tooth's structure. After the procedure, the remaining tooth is much stronger than it would be after traditional treatment.
Dedicated Follow-Up Care
We strive to ensure patients experience a successful recovery, both immediate and long-term, by providing ongoing follow-up care. This allows us to check you are healing properly and verify that we are providing effective solutions. In addition to a regular six-month follow-up visit, Dr. Petersen also includes complimentary annual visits to monitor your health. When patients do require retreatment, we are fully equipped to handle even the most complex an challenging cases.
